World Laboratory Day in 2026 was observed on Thursday, April 23, 2026. It is celebrated every year on April 23 to recognize the vital role laboratories and laboratory professionals play in scientific discovery, healthcare, and technological advancement.

On this special occasion, I extend warm greetings to all Laboratory Scientists, Technologists, Researchers, and Laboratory Professionals across Nigeria and beyond. Today offers us a valuable opportunity to reflect on the critical role laboratories play in national development and global advancement.

The theme, “Good Laboratory Practice – The Bridge Between Science and Technology,” aptly captures the essence of our profession. Science, in its pure form, generates knowledge, while technology transforms that knowledge into practical solutions that improve lives. However, the transition from scientific discovery to technological application does not occur by chance—it is made possible through Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).

Good Laboratory Practice represents a system of management controls, procedures, and standards that ensure the quality, integrity, reliability, and reproducibility of laboratory results. It is the foundation upon which credible science is built and the pathway through which innovation becomes reality. Without adherence to GLP, scientific findings risk becoming unreliable, and technological advancement may be compromised.

At the heart of this process are licensed Professional Laboratory Scientists and Technologists, whose expertise, discipline, and ethical commitment serve as the driving force behind innovation. These professionals are not merely operators of equipment; they are catalysts for national development. Through accurate testing, quality assurance, research support, and regulatory compliance, they ensure that industries, healthcare systems, environmental management, and educational institutions function effectively and safely.

In Nigeria, the role of the laboratory professional is increasingly indispensable. From supporting industrial production and ensuring food and drug safety, to advancing healthcare diagnostics and environmental monitoring, laboratory practitioners are central to achieving sustainable development goals. Their contributions directly impact economic growth, public health, technological innovation, and national security.

As the regulatory body established by law to oversee the practice of Science Laboratory Technology in Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) remains committed to strengthening professional standards, promoting capacity building, and ensuring that only qualified and licensed practitioners operate within our laboratories. This is essential to maintaining the integrity of laboratory services and safeguarding public trust.

I therefore call on all stakeholders—government, academia, industry, and the general public—to recognize and support the vital contributions of Laboratory Scientists and Technologists. Investment in laboratory infrastructure, continuous training, and strict adherence to Good Laboratory Practice are non-negotiable if we are to build a resilient and innovative nation.

To all laboratory professionals, I encourage you to remain steadfast in upholding the highest standards of practice. Your role is not only technical but transformational. You are the bridge between ideas and impact, between science and technology, and ultimately, between knowledge and national development.
