The Department received a large number of research proposals from members of the Institute. These proposals have been categorized into four broad headings i.e. Poverty Alleviation, Improvement, Academic and Production purposes. Various Federal Parastatals/ Agencies, with mandates in areas of the projects concerned have been identified for possible collaboration in their further development. The selection of six (6) projects with good prospects and economic viability in various areas is being proposed. The selected projects will be developed to patent levels if required. The final result of the projects can be showcased as prototypes by the Institute during exhibitions, training workshops, conferences and other events involving the institute.

As part of the Institute's core functions, and in line with the Transformation Agenda of the President, the Institute is currently undertaking the following projects as part of its ongoing research:

1. Development of Aflatoxin B1 Antibody. This project is being undertaken to enhance the capability in the detection of mycotoxins in foods and food products
2. Genetic bases and molecular identification of differentially expressed gene in some selected cowpea. Through this project cowpea can be selected that are genetically resistant to pests and other diseases.
3. Laboratory investigation and monitoring of heavy metal poisoning in humans and animals in mining sites in Nigeria. Arising from the outbreak of lead poisoning in mining areas in the country, the Institute is embarking on this pilot project to determine the magnitude and impact of the problem.
4. Development of capability in forensic laboratory investigations. At the moment, most of the forensic laboratory investigations are performed outside the country and once the facility is developed in the Institute, it would save foreign exchange and time in such investigations.
